Refrigerants

Refrigerants

1. Purpose

The "Refrigerants" form helps you calculate the environmental impact associated with the refrigerants used in your company's cooling and refrigeration systems. Refrigerants are substances that absorb and release heat to enable cooling, but some can have a significant global warming potential if released into the atmosphere.

2. Entering Your Refrigerant Data

  • Scope: Choose whether you want to calculate the impact for the calendar year or a specific month.
  • Year: Select the year for which you want to calculate the refrigerant consumption impact.
  • Month (if applicable): If you chose "Month" in the "Scope" field, select the specific month.
  • Refrigerant Consumption:
    • Click "+ Add New" to add a row for each type of refrigerant used.
    • Refrigerant: Select the specific refrigerant from the dropdown list. The list should include common refrigerants with known environmental impacts.
    • kg: Enter the total kilograms (kg) of that refrigerant used or emitted during the selected period.

3. How the Calculation Works

The tool uses the entered data on refrigerant types and quantities, along with emission factors associated with each specific refrigerant, to calculate the total impact. This impact is calculated in kilograms of CO2 equivalent (kg CO2-eq), which standardizes the global warming potential of different refrigerants.

4. Understanding the Results

  • Impact (kg CO2-eq): This column displays the calculated environmental impact for each type of refrigerant in kilograms of CO2 equivalent.
  • Total Impact: The total impact of all refrigerants used is displayed at the bottom of the form.

5. What Happens Next?

Once you've entered all the necessary data, click "Submit." The tool will automatically calculate the total impact of refrigerant consumption and display it on the right side of the form. This data will be incorporated into your overall environmental footprint report, accessible through the "Results Dashboard." You can then use this information to identify areas for improvement, such as transitioning to refrigerants with lower global warming potential, minimizing refrigerant leaks, and implementing proper refrigerant recovery and recycling practices.
