Waste

1. Purpose

The "Waste" form helps you calculate the environmental impact associated with different types of waste your company produces. This information contributes to your overall environmental footprint assessment and can highlight areas for improvement in waste management practices.

2. Entering Your Waste Data

  • Scope: Choose whether you want to calculate the impact for the calendar year or a specific month.
  • Year: Select the year for which you want to calculate the waste impact.
  • Month (if applicable): If you chose "Month" in the "Scope" field, select the specific month.
  • Do you know the amount of waste produced in kg?
    • If you select "Yes," you'll be able to directly input the waste amount in kilograms for each waste type.
    • If you select "No," you'll use the built-in "kg of waste calculator" to estimate the waste amount.

3. Using the kg of Waste Calculator (if applicable)

If you don't know the waste amount in kilograms, the calculator will guide you through a few simple questions to estimate it:

  • Waste type: Select the type of waste from the dropdown list (e.g., Glass, Organic, Paper & Cardboard, Plastic, Residual).
  • How many liters does 1 garbage bag/container contain? Enter the volume of your waste container in liters.
  • How often per month is the bag/container disposed and changed? Enter the frequency of waste disposal.
  • How full is the bag/container approximately? Estimate the fill level of the container (in percentage). If unsure, leave the default value of 100%.

Once you answer these questions for a waste type, click "Calculate kg of waste." The tool will estimate the waste amount in kilograms and auto-fill it in the "Data (kg)" field for that waste type. Repeat this process for all waste types.

4. Inputting Waste Data Directly (if applicable)

If you know the waste amount in kilograms, directly enter the data for each waste type in the "Data (kg)" field.

5. How the Calculation Works

The tool uses the entered waste data (either directly inputted or calculated) and factors in emission data associated with the production, transportation, and disposal of each waste type to calculate the total CO2 emissions. The impact is calculated in kilograms of CO2 equivalent (kg CO2-eq).

6. Understanding the Results

  • Impact (kg CO2-eq): This column displays the calculated environmental impact for each waste type in kilograms of CO2 equivalent.
  • Share (%): This column shows the percentage contribution of each waste type to the total waste impact. This helps you identify which waste types have the most significant environmental impact.

7. What Happens Next?

Once you've entered all the necessary data, click "Submit." The tool will automatically calculate the total impact of waste and display it on the ride side of the form. This data will be incorporated into your overall environmental footprint report, accessible through the "Results Dashboard." You can then use this information to identify areas for improvement, such as reducing waste generation, improving recycling rates, or composting organic waste.
